Why do most "People" refuse to understand they are animals?

Most humans refuse to understand they are a product of the evolutionary process, and by that rite they are in part or whole animals. Sure our intellect is above the base animal kingdom, but until each realizes it is because of their animistic nature that most the troubles in their lives and the lives of others are caused we'll not be able to move forward as a brotherhood of mankind.
