Is donating to charity banquet tax deductible?

If someone were to donate to our HIV/AIDS banquet, would their donation be tax deductible for them? We are a student organization and don't generate much income to file for non-profit status, but the donations pay for the plate ($12.50), and then the rest goes to a federally recognized charity.
